At APWG we believe that Phonics is a crucial skill that underpins children's ability to both read and write.
We use a Synthetic Phonics approach to teach every child to be able to match the sounds of spoken English with individual letters or groups of letters, and then to blend these sounds together to read words. Children are also taught to segment words into individual sounds for spelling.
Phonics is taught daily in all classes from Nursery to Year 2 and in targeted groups (where necessary) to older children. We follow the Time for Phonics program which determines the order sounds and commonly used words are taught.
Children are given lots of opportunities throughout the curriculum to rehearse and apply their newly acquired phonic skills.
